Emu Farming in America - Seize the Day

If you are looking to buy emu chicks or older birds you've come to the right place.  Songline Farm is currently taking orders and deposits for 2009 chicks.  We anticipate hatching 60-100 chicks in April and May.  Chicks start at $150.00 each with an additional $15.00 per month for feed/maintenance.

Breeding since 1995 we have refined our lines to produce birds of exceptional docile temperament and average production of 25 pounds of fat and 25 of meat at 14 month processing.

We also have a number of 1 year old birds that will come into their 1st breeding season this coming fall, and possibly some older proven birds.  As we are currently reviewing our blood line strategy which older birds and what prices have not yet been determined, but shall be by late March.

We are able to provide histories of egg production and fertility for most birds back three generations.  We have also been 100% correct in sexing all birds which we have sold.

Why Emu Farming?

Now is the time to seize the opportunity to become involved in America's newest and most exciting agri-business. The product demand cycle is picking up speed as more consumers become aware of the healthy and vital products produced by the emu.

Because the bird population has shrunk since the 2002 farm census while product demand has increased we are facing supply shortages. As a result, the industry will enjoy a returned value for existing breeding birds and higher prices for foundation stock as well as processing stock.

Grow Out Emu Birds

We do not sell birds to Mass. Farmers who are not licensed by the Fish and Game Department.   You must have a class 4 propagators permit. Contact me for information and where to apply.

If you are purchasing birds for outside the state of Mass. it is your responsibility to review your state's import requirements.

The Emu Farming Advantage

  • Emu is a relatively simple animal to farm and easy to manage

  • Emu adapts to almost any climatic condition

  • Emu has a very low susceptibility to disease

  • Emu integrates well with other farming operations, i.e. horses, cattle, sheep, fruit orchards, etc.

  • Emu require very little ground space when compared to other livestock, (15 acres easily accommodates up to 600 birds)

  • Emu efficiently convert feed to meat yielding 18 - 25 lbs. of premium meat at a processing age of one year, which allows a quick turn over of stock for the breeder.

  • Emu consume negligible dollars in feed (approx. $105.00 per year) resulting in a high proportion of product revenue to low maintenance cost.

  • Emu is "the totally usable bird"; oil, meat, leather, feathers, toenail and eggshells.

Just imagine what America will be like, decades from now, when millions of emu will be feeding on our farms. Much of our nation will be a greener, healthier and better place to live. Many extended families will once again thrive and grow in reborn rural communities. Please e-mail us at deedee@allaboutemu.com if you are interested in purchasing stock to start your own Emu Farm.
